The category U81kg is less Japanese than the previous male categories. More a European oriented category with some good names in the field. The World Championships will have a new World Champion without Israeli World Champion Sagi Muki? In fact Saeid Mollaei and Alexander Wieczerzak are the former World Champions in the field. Wieczerzak won in in Budapest and now the German is back. We will go through a list of top athletes that we expect to shine in this amazing category.

Matthias Casse captures European gold for first time since junior world title
What an tremendous day for Belgian Matthias Casse. He captured the European Games title in Minsk and was among the favourites. The absence of his nemesis Sagi Muki might have helped him in the end, but he was the best of this top field and defeated opponents this he usually experiences difficulties fighting them including 2017 World Champion Alexander Wieczerzak (GER).

Exciting road to Tokyo between Wieczerzak and Ressel
Germany have a long and storied tradition of success in the U81kg weight category. From 2003 world champion Florian Wanner, to 2008 Olympic silver and 2012 Olympic champion Ole Bischof, to European medallist, World Team medallist and Grand Slam winner Sven Maresch and now 2017 world champion Alexander Wieczerzak and Paris Grand Slam gold medallist Dominic Ressel.

Alexander Wieczerzak wants to make the impossible possible again
Alexander Wieczerzak was a great surprise at the 2017 World Championships taking the gold medal U81kg. He never won an IJF event before. The IJF spoke to Germany's reigning U81kg world champion who fights at the European Cup in Celje U90kg this weekend in preparation of the forthcoming World Championships.
