Preview Day two Grand Slam Antalya
At the second day of the Grand Slam in Antalya there are two world champions in the -73kg category but one is a junior, Vusal Galandarzade (AZE), and one is a senior, Nils Stump (SUI). This is the junior world number one’s 3rd grand slam effort and this time his teammate and senior world number one Heydarov is not present. Galandarzade has ahead of him a manageable draw with potential wins available against Nakano (PHI) in the first round and subsequent contests yet to be decided but with Bahrain, Costa Rica and Cyprus in the mix, all smaller judo nations, their is an opportunity for him to start laying the ground work for his Los Angeles campaign.

Soichi Hashimoto wins fourth Masters title
One of the surprises of the second day of the Masters in Budapest was Behruzi Khojazoda (TJK) who confirmed the good form of Tajik judo, especially since the first edition of the Dushanbe Grand Prix. During the matchday for men U73kg Khojazoda allowed himself to beat the reigning world champion, Nils Stump (SUI) who released his brand new red bib here in Budapest. In the final though he had to face Soichi Hashimoto (JPN). At the Masters athletes of 59 countries, the best in the sport and 14 Olympic champions and 33 world champions among the participants. What a crown to win here, Hashimoto though did it for the fourth time.

Nils Stump writes history for Switzerland with first world title
Switzerland is a rather small judo country. On the ninth of May the Swiss stamped their biggest ever success with a gold medal for Nils Stump. Eric Born and Sergei Aschwanden once made it to the world championships final, but it was Stump who became the first world champion for his country. He was sharp as a Swiss knife from the start and surprised the odds, judo fans, but not himself.

Sensational victory for Swiss Nils Stump
We know that Wandtke knows better than anybody how to outdo himself when he faces legendary judoka. He was, to everyone's surprise, the victory over the double Olympic champion, Shohei Ono (JPN), during the mixed team tournament of the Tokyo 2020 Games, throwing him twice for waza-ari. At the Grand Slam in Tel Aviv, it was World Champion Tsend-Ochir who paid the price for facing the Wandtke tornado and it was therefore the German who qualified for the final U73kg against Swiss Nils Stump.

Grand Slam gold Premier for Swiss Nils Stump
For the first time in history a Swiss man has won a Grand Slam. In Abu Dhabi it was Nils Stump who showed his capabilities by taking the gold in a final against Giovanni Esposito, the man who collected too much silverware so far in his life. Stump was close once in Budapest, but this time the gold was waiting for him.

Rustam Orujov Europe’s best man
Rustam Orujov (AZE) does not need to be introduced. Twice a silver medalist at the World Championships, silver medalist at the last Olympic Games and winner of the World Judo Masters, he is currently second in the world ranking list and here in Hungary he was seeded number one. The Azeri did not disappoint as he blasted his way to the final where he found the Swiss fighter Nils Stump, whose track record is far from that of his opposition.
