Yashar Najafov claims the fame in Baku
Yashar Najafov surprised with a thrilling gold medal today at home at the Grand Slam of Baku. The Azeri did not tremble against a determined Vieru in the semi final and offered himself a place in the final, although at the start of the competition, he was not one of the favourites. In IJF's golden score he was still impressed by his own final. He had no plan for the day and was susprised about his performance. His hero is Elchin Ismayilov who is now the coach who supported his career along the way to gold. His next goal is the European Championships in Montpellier in November.

Ryoma Tanaka sets career highlight at Budapest masters
In the final of the men’s U66kg of the Masters in Budapest Denis Vieru faced Ryoma Tanaka (JPN) in a match that promised to be thrilling, with two judoka of refined styles. Fans were not disappointed even if we would have loved to see more of this final. After a powerful o-soto-gari, in the air Tanaka changed direction to throw Vieru flat on his back. This is the kind of judo we would have been happy to see again and again, but ippon being ippon, the fight was over and the gold medal went to Ryoma Tanaka.

David Garcia Torne confirms Spanish judo vibe
The Spanish team is in good shape and that all the efforts made over recent months, even years, are paying off. At the Grand prix in Linz David Garcia Torne (ESP) eliminated the world number one and consequently the number one seed, Denis Vieru (MDA), who could not recover and later on did not show up in the repechage.

Preview U66kg Doha: Abe and Maruyama warm-up for that final battle
It’s the Japanese day at day 2 with the Abe siblings but it’s also hard choosing between Hifumi Abe and Joshiro Maruyama who will take the gold at the World Judo Championships in Doha U66kg. Both are big throwers but Abe seems to be more capable tactically, and thus has the edge. We’d go with Abe. Denis Vieru, is the world ranked No. 1, but he has fought both Abe and Maruyama twice each, and lost to both of them each time.

Who are the men to watch at the Grand Slam
At U60kg, Yang Yung Wei (TPE) is the main man to look out for. The main players to watch at U66kg are Denis Vieru (MDA) and An Baul (KOR). Big throwers Tal Flicker (ISR) and Baruch Shmailov (ISR) are always exciting to watch.
