Strong french women prevail in Benidorm
France emerged victorious at the European Open in Benidorm on Saturday, topping the medal table ahead of host nation Spain and Ukraine. A high-calibre line-up, particularly in the women’s -70kg category, delivered a thrilling showdown between reigning World Champion Margaux Pinot (FRA) and 2023 World silver medallist Giovanna Scoccimarro (GER). The tense final extended into golden score, ending with a third shido against Scoccimarro, handing the win to Pinot.

Saki Niizoe new World Champion U70kg
Saki Niizoe is the new World Champion U70 after two years of domination of Barbara Matic who still won a third World Championships medal in a row finishing with bronze. Niizoe defeated Germany’s tall athlete Giovanna Scoccimarro in the final. Chizuru Arai was the last Japanese winner in 2018 (and 2017). Niizoe is only the third Japanese world champion ever in this division.

In Abu Dhabi Giovanna Scoccimarro took the gold medal in the final against a rather unknown Japanese, at least for the moment, who comes out of the junior universe and who, like all Japanese, was a favourite despite her youth and anonymity. This is what happens when judo is practised in Japan. Shiho Tanaka showed her face at the Belgian Open and she won a few youth tournaments in France and Russia. However as a double winner of the Kodokan Cup you cannot hide anymore, you’re on the radar.

Yuri Alvear catches Grand Slam gold in Brasilia
Three-time world champion Yuri Alvear (COL) beat one of the brightest prospects in the sport to rule in Brasilia. The 33-year-old had too much experience for 21-year-old Montreal Grand Prix winner Giovanna Scoccimarro (GER). Germany’s leading U70kg hope was only 11 when Alvear won her first world title in 2009 and still has to make up ground to trouble the elite judoka in the category but has time on her side.
