Stunning field U57kg in Paris
One of the most spectacular weightclasses at the Grand Slam in Paris will be the U57kg division. On Friday the event will include three world champions: Christa Deguchi, Jessica Klimkait and Rafaela Silva as well as two Olympic champions Nora Gjakova and again Silva. They are spread evenly through the 4 quarters of the draw and in theory could be the four semi-finalists at the end of the preliminary block. However, we haven’t yet mentioned the big names punctuating the rest of the group and the list includes world and Olympic medallists in spades.

Canadians Christa Deguchi and Jessica Klimkait were the favourites in advance for the title at the Grand Slam in Tokyo U57kg and sure enough, the two didn’t disappoint, each making their way to the semi-final stages.

Jessica Klimkait defeats Deguchi and takes control
For the third time this year, Canadians Jessica Klimkait and Christa Deguchi found themselves going head-to-head in a Grand Slam final. Klimkait won the Tel Aviv Grand Slam in February, while Deguchi prevailed in their most recent showdown in Ulaanbaatar in June. Klimkait who pulled ahead in the series between the two Canadian rivals, winning the U57kg final in overtime and claiming the top spot on the podium. The two finalists, who know each other very well, squared off in a battle that resembled a major chess game, with every move calculated to avoid leaving an opening.
