Natsumi Tsunoda can safely retire with Olympic gold
It was always going to be Tsunoda. She is a three-time World Champion (2021, 2022, 2023) and has been unbeaten by any non-Japanese since getting her World title in 2021 (her compatriot Rina Tatsukawa had beaten her in the 2022 Tokyo Grand Slam). She was head and shoulders above everyone else, and unless something were to terribly go wrong, she was expected to be the gold medalist.

The women's U48kg category on the first day of the Olympic Games brought together the best athletes for the quarter-finals, which were filled with intense matches and unexpected outcomes. French fan favorite Shirine Boukli faced a setback, losing to Japan's Natsumi Tsunoda. While this defeat wasn't a complete surprise given Tsunoda's prowess, it was still a significant disappointment for the home crowd. At the first judo day Natsumi Tsunoda is currently No. 4 in the Olympic Rankings but there's no question she's the top prospect for gold. Everyone knows she likes to do tomoe-nage but no one seems able to stop it. Lately, she's added the Mollaei reverse kata-guruma into her repertoire too.

Who can beat Uta Abe in Paris?
Uta Abe is an Olympic Champion and a four-time World Champion. Throughout her international career, she has been beaten only three times. The first time was against teammate Natsumi Tsunoda in the final of the 2016 Tokyo Grand Slam, when Abe was only 16 years old.
