On this day in 2021: Kokoro Kageura brings the heavyweight title to Japan
The heavyweight final at the World Championships was the last contest of the individual tournament where Tamerlan Bashaev (RJF) and Kokoro Kageura (JPN) were opposed, an expected final in a field where many top players lacked. It happened two years ago in Budapest exactly at 12 June.

Kokoro Kageura added to the Japanese team for Doha Worlds
The Japanese Judo Federation (AJJF) have just announced that Kosuke Mashiyama, who had been selected in the -90kg category for the 2023 World Championships (7-14 May, Doha, Qatar), will be withdrawn from the men's team in favour of Kokoro Kageura. The latter, 2021 world champion in +100kg and who beat Teddy Riner at the Paris 2020 Grand Slam, will therefore be the second Japanese in the category, along with Tatsuru Saito.

Can Guram Tushishvili win the Olympic title?
Guram Tushishvili (GEO) is one of the frontrunners for the +100kg Olympic gold. The other top prospects, of course, are Teddy Riner (FRA) and the Japanese representative – presumably it will be Tatsuru Saito, although Kokoro Kageura is currently the higher-ranking player. Lukas Krpalek (CZE) would have been a top prospect too but he has just announced his move back down to U100kg.

With Lukas Krpalek (CZE) moving back to U100kg, Teddy Riner’s (FRA) main rivals are down to just four players: Guram Tushishvili (GEO), Kokoro Kageura (JPN), Tatsuro Saito (JPN) and Tamerlan Bashaev (RUS). Let’s look at the prospect of each of them.

Keiji Suzuki: this is just the beginning for Tatsuru Saito
At the Masters in Jerusalem the Japanese heavyweight will aim to capture both heavyweight titles. With Olympic Champion and Tokyo Grand Slam winner Akira Sone Japan have a serious chance for gold and might be opposed to world champion Romane Dicko. In the men’s heavyweight division both Kokoro Kageura and Tatsuru Saito are lined up for the Jerusalem masters. Now Teddy Riner is not present as well as Olympic Champion Lukas Krpalek there are chances for the Japan’s big boys.

Hyoga Ota claims heavyweight Grand Slam title
For the heavyweight final at the Grand Slam in Tokyo Hyoga Ota was opposed to Kororo Kageura in the final. It's not a secret that heavyweights often need more time to set up the right kumi-kata and find the right opportunity. It took a little more than four minutes for Hyoga Ota (JPN) to execute a superb o-uchi-gari for ippon, to conclude a fantastic harvest of medals for Japan.
