Natsumi Tsunoda can safely retire with Olympic gold
It was always going to be Tsunoda. She is a three-time World Champion (2021, 2022, 2023) and has been unbeaten by any non-Japanese since getting her World title in 2021 (her compatriot Rina Tatsukawa had beaten her in the 2022 Tokyo Grand Slam). She was head and shoulders above everyone else, and unless something were to terribly go wrong, she was expected to be the gold medalist.

Who are the women to watch at the Grand Slam
At U48kg, the two main players to watch are Shirine Boukli (FRA) and Rina Tatsukawa (JPN). The U52kg division is an exciting one even without Uta Abe (JPN). The players to watch out for are Distria Krasniqi (FRA), Amandine Buchard (FRA), Reka Pupp (HUN), Estrella Lopez Sheriff (ESP) and Charline Van Snick (BEL).

Japan’s Rina Tatsukawa takes gold in Baku
In Baku there was a scuffle of favourites that confirms that no-one is untouchable, no-one wins by name and resumé. Take Shira Rishony for example; the Israeli was the favourite in Baku, number 12 in the world and with extensive experience. In her first contest she lost against Russian Daria Pichkaleva, number 90; thanks for coming and see you soon.
