Current senior top athletes won European title in cadets in 2015
The Cadet European Championships 2024 in Sofia will feature 276 young men in 8 categories over three days. Bulgaria, already hosting senior European titleholders like in 2015. Some of the Champions in Sofia in 2015 were Manuel Lombardo, who now will fight for a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games. Also champion in Sofia in 2015 were current world champion Zelym Kotsoiev (fighting for Ukraine) and Inal Tasoev, the current heavyweight title candidate.

Akil Gjakova and Eteri Liparteliani emerge in Kosovo
In the men's U73kg final at the European Open held in Kosovo, former European Champion Akil Gjakova emerged victorious, defeating Manuel Lombardo. Nora Gjakova, Distria Krasniqi, and junior Dardan Cena secured bronze medals in their respective categories. Head coach Driton "Toni" Kuka expressed astonishment at Gjakova's exceptional performance, particularly his victory over top-ranked Hidayat Heydarov en route to the final, describing it as the key to success.

Spotlight on Manuel Lombardo
Manuel Lombardo is one of the top players from Italy. When he was fighting at -66kg (now he’s moved up to -73kg). Last week he was training at the OTC at Papendal in the Netherlands and seemed to have good fun going deep as a preparation on the IJF Masters in Budapest in August. The World number two of Doha rose quickly in his category. Interestingly, Lombardo’s teammate, former Olympic Champion Fabio Basile, has decided to move back down to -66kg. A Lombardo-Basile match-up would have been interesting too. But that's not going to happen either. Oon Yeoh analysed Lombardo for us.

Manuel Lombardo back at desired level with Antalya gold
Pointing to a distant 31st place in the world, not exactly in line with his qualities as an athlete, Italian Manuel Lombardo, who was junior world champion in 2018, is a solid competitor who can beat everyone and who therefore deserves to move up the rankings. He proved it today by winning with a his semi final by waza-ari against Heydarov, thus offering himself a final against the reigning world champion Tsogtbaatar Tsend-Ochir.

Elios Manzi outstanding in Abu Dhabi and follows Manuel Lombardo
The Italian men and women are gaining momentum this year especially in the lightweight categories where in each division they have a few contenders. It is not different in U66kg where both Elios Manzi and Matteo Piras were able to go for the medals at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi. Elios Manzi had an outstanding day and captured the gold medal against Serbia’s Strahinja Buncic who never made it to a final in the IJF World Judo Tour.

Manuel Lombardo tanks confidence in Zagreb
It was former world number one U66kg Manuel Lombardo who captured the gold medal on Saturday in Zagreb’s Grand Prix. The Italian executed Umayev unceremoniously. The second, Daniel Cargnin. The Brazilian defeated Hojak and met Lombardo in the semi-finals. Above, the Cuban Magdiel Estrada, who came hot from Budapest, met with the Korean Eunkyul Lee for a place in the final. Lombardo easily won, and so did Estrada. Everything was set for the last contest.
