Sanshiro Murao again sensational in Tokyo Grand Slam
The final in Tokyo U90kg promised to be thrilling. It must be said that Sanshiro Murao once again demonstrated his immense technique: uchi-mata in 14 seconds in the first round, o-soto-gari in 1 minute 19 in the second. In the semi-final, things were more complicated, since it took Murao 9 minutes 48 to overcome his compatriot Goki Tajima. On his side, Maisuradze won a tactical victory in the first round, before pinning his opponent in the second. In the semi-final, the Georgian judoka won in golden score by a waza-ari.

Luka Maisuradze makes his comeback at Euro Open in Rome
Luka Maisuradze is one of the best prospects from Georgia. He is most known for a technique he used to beat teammate Lasha Bekauri in the -90kg final of the 2023 Doha World Championships. It’s a new technique. Some call it a kind of yoko-wakare, some call it tani-otoshi, some just call it the Maisuradze Takedown. He most likely was not the first ever person to do it. Japan’s 1981 World Champion Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki, for example, often taught a move very similar to this (but to the side).

Luka Maisuradze in the lead for Olympic qualification
Georgian world champion Luka Maisuradze is world number one by quite a large margin, some 1600 points. In other categories 1600 points alone might be enough to secure Olympic qualification, or at least a continental quota place, but for Maisuradze that’s the buffer he’s chosen to ensure his occupation at the very top of the world.

Athletes jump in the world ranking after collecting 700 points
No direct changes this week after the Oceania Open in Perth and Georgia still strong in the men’s categories with three World Ranking leaders: Grigalashvili, Maisuradze and Sulamanidze. Canada and Italy both have two world ranking leaders in Scutto and Bellandi (ITA) and Deguchi and Beauchemin-Pinard.

Luka Maisuradze claims the world title by surprise
The world championships final for men U90kg was a straight-up battle to see who could out-Georgian the other and the sizeable Georgian contingent in the crowd added to the atmosphere in the ABHA Arena. Both players chose to attack using what has come to be known widely as the Georgian grip, that is, a cross-grip with the strong hand over the back on the opponent’s belt. Both were able to enter into their powerful attacks consistently, prompting many last-ditch escapes to avoid conceding a score.
