Forgotten Heroes: Hidehiko Yoshida (JPN)
Hidehiko Yoshida is a World and Olympic Champion. He had one of the most stylish and devastating uchimatas the sport has ever known. And he had an aura of dominance on the mat only topped by his teammate, the late, great Toshihiko Koga. Yet, when people talk about the greats of judo, Yoshida hardly ever gets mentioned. That's probably partly because he failed to live up to his potential and partly because he became an MMA player after retiring from judo.

The Best Sode trailblazers
Techniques come and go and sometimes they come around again. Judo fans around the world got their first glimpse of a breath-taking sode-tsurikomi-goshi done off just one hand when the late great Japanese champion Toshihiko Koga used it in the 1989 Belgrade World Championships. He actually didn’t score with it but he followed on into groundwork and strangled his opponent, Majemite Omagbaluwaje of Nigeria.

Laborde on great form, but Wakana Koga snatches Masters gold
In the final of the IJF Masters for women U48kg it took Japanese lightweight Wakana Koga less than one and a half minutes to launch an ippon-scoring seoi-otoshi for gold. The unseeded American Maria Celia Laborde has had an outstanding day and at 33 years of age, it looks like she has secured her spot in Paris next year. Wakana Koga takes the gold and makes her own bid for the Paris Games.

Career best for Shirine Boukli in Jerusalem
The final block of the women’s U48kg in Jerusalem brought interesting contests without pre-determined winners. Shirine Boukli reached the final, to face Wakana Koga, without a hitch. She was strong, determined and with a confidence that spilled over, presenting itself as an impossibility to lose. She passed Costa in the semi-final just as easily as she did the others. The final could have present a test though.

L’équipe de France de judo sourit à Israël. Championne d’Europe en titre, Shirine Boukli s’est offert le titre, ce mardi 20 décembre, au Masters de Jérusalem chez les moins de 48 kg. La Nîmoise a écarté la Japonaise Wakana Koga en finale.
