Wakaba Tomita gives Japan seventh gold in Mongolia
The hierarchy was perfectly respected in the +78kg category of the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar, since the four best athletes in the category were still in the running for the semi-finals. At the top of the draw sheet, we found the world number one and recent bronze medallist of the world championships, Raz Hershko (ISR). After a first round concluded with penalties, she scored two waza-ari against Hyeonji Lee (KOR) before facing the Mongolian judoka Adiyasuren Amarsaikhan (MGL). The latter could do nothing against Hershko who logically qualified for the final.

Wakaba Tomita keeps world championships form
Two strong women's heavyweight nations qualified for the Grand Slam final for women +78kg in Tashkent. On one side we had the Japanese, Wakaba Tomita, junior world champion in 2015 and twice a senior world medallist, in 2021 in Hungary and in 2022 here in Tashkent.

Preview +78kg Tashkent: Dicko and Tomita stand out
The top two prospects for gold in the +78kg division in Tashkent is Romane Dicko (FRA) and Wakaba Tomita (JPN). Dicko is the reigning European Champion, where she defeated another top competitor, Raz Hershko (ISR) in the final. Dicko has difficulty with Japanese players though. She lost to Akira Sone in the Mixed Teams event at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Wakaba Tomita confirms selection for the worlds by taking All Japan title
Wakaba Tomita captured the title of the 37th Empress's Cup All Japan Women's Judo Championship in Yokohama. In the final Tomia defeated Akemi Hashimoto. Sarah Asahina and Hikaru Kodama captured the bronze medals.

Japan vs France, Wakaba Tomita wins in Paris
The category +78kg at the Grand Slam in Paris was like the host of the party didn't want to feed his guests. France has a very strong heavyweight school. Four of them defended the national honour, including Romane Dicko, Olympic runner-up. With the Brazilian and top seed Beatriz Souza eliminated in her first match, between France and a gold medal only a Japanese, Wakaba Tomita, stood in the way but be careful because we said ‘Japanese.’

Sarah Asahina claims third world title
Japanese heavyweight Sarah Asahina collected her third World title in an all Japanese final against Wakaba Tomita. Asahina looked stronger in a match that didn’t deliver any score. Asahina was world Open champion in 2017 and won the heavyweight title in 2018. Now 24, she was the best of the world for the third time in her young career but won’t go to the Olympic Games. Tomita is a year older and was junior world champion in 2015. She is less tall, but faster and with a refined technique, it was a fight between opposing styles.
