Jorge Fonseca regains the title in Antalya
The final for men U100kg in Antalya never took place. A few months ago Shady Elnahas suffered a rib injury which disabled him for a while. “The result is there, the points are there and the manner is there. During the elimination phases, a slight pain arose in the rib and Shady did not want to take any unnecessary risks just two months before the Olympic Games,” explained coach Antoine Valois-Fortier. Jorge Fonseca regained the title in Antalya that he won in 2022.

Strong Portuguese team at first Judo Grand Prix of 2023
The Judo Grand Prix in Portugal is the first highly anticipated event and will see some of the world’s best judoka competing in the city of Almada. This event will bring together some of the best judoka from around the world, with a particular emphasis on the Portuguese athletes. The first day of the event will be next Friday at 27th of January and will last for three days. Leading the way for the Portuguese judoka will be Catarina Costa and Telma Monteiro at the first day, followed by Barbara Timo as top competitor for Portugal and on the third and last day Rochele Nunes and Jorge Fonseca will compete for the home crowd.

Preview U100kg Tashkent: Jorge Fonseca going for the triple
Without question, the top favourite in the U100kg is double World Champion Jorge Fonseca (POR). He’s only been defeated three times this year. Once was against a Russian but Russia won’t be taking part in the World’s this year. And twice was against Piotr Kuczera (POL) but Kuczera won’t be competing in Tashkent either.

Matvey Kanikovskiy patient, tactical and faultless in Ulaanbatar
The whole world knows that Jorge Fonseca would try to execute his famous osoto-gari in the final of the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar. Very few can stop it because it is explosive. However, young Matvey Kanikovskiy prepared seriously for the final and responded with the same weapons and a first waza-ari. His young opponent was cold as ice and tactically perfect. Time ran out and Kanikovskiy added a second title for his team this day, the first ever in the World Judo Tour for Matvey Kanikovskiy.

Lots of surprises at closing day of European Championships
Again surprises throughout the third day of the European Championships in Sofia and in the end not the first names on the podium that would have come up in your mind estimating the winners. Again the men’s tournament was a big graveyard especially in the men’s U100kg where World Champion Jorge Fonseca lost by a huge ippon of Piotr Kuczera who qualified for the final.

Jorge Fonseca can improve coach Pedro Soares in Sofia
Jorge Fonseca is a double World Champion but he doesn’t yet have a European Championship title. His closest was a bronze in the 2020 European Championships in Prague. Now he is the favourite for the European title in Sofia this week.
