Dota Arai in the foosteps of Ishii, Haga, Anai and Suzuki
The favourites in the category U100kg at the Junior Worlds in Odivelas were no match for the Japanese Dota Arai who qualified for the final after a first ippon from an aerial uchi-mata against Giorgi Baduashvili (GEO), then a waza-ari and an ippon, still with a left-handed uchi-mata against Bogdan Petre (ROU), two waza-ari against Joes Schell (NED), and finally ippon against Parviz Abdurakhmonov (TJK) in the semi-final.

5 years ago: Aaron Wolf hunts down seventh world gold for Japan
Japanese Japan Wolf captured the world title U100kg in Budapest defeating Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Varlam Liparteliani of Georgia to become Japan’s seventh gold medallist in Budapest from a total of 14 weight categories. After Kosei Inoue, Keiji Suzuki, Takamasa Anai and Ryunosuke Haga another Japanese starlet taking the gold U100kg to Japan. Today five years ago he became world champion and followed up his Olympic title.

Ryunosuke Haga gets new hope for Tokyo
Former world champion Haga Ryunosuke put the U100kg field on notice as he won his second Grand Slam title and first since 2015. The Olympic bronze medallist, who has been plagued by injuries since Rio 2016, returned to the top of an IJF medal podium after a two-year barren spell by beating Olympic silver medallist Elmar Gasimov (AZE).
