Georgia celebrates first gold by Lasha Bekauri
At the Grand Slam of Tbilisi the host country was obviously waiting for the day with their best chances of podium finishes. The first judoka that an entire nation was looking forward to was Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri. In his lively and timely style, Bekauri had to pull out all the stops, pushed by the cheers of the public, to get rid of the traps of the first rounds. He knew it, nothing would be easy, especially since he was not the number 1 seed of the tournament. That place was occupied by his compatriot Beka Gviniashvili but the latter was eliminated before the quarter-finals by Theodoros Tselidis (GRE).

Beka Gviniashvili captured fifth Grand Slam gold
Georgia’s Beka Gviniashviliremains an asset U90kg despite all the competition in his own country. At the Grand Slam in Tel Aviv Gvinishvili decided the final would be fought on his terms and he gripped dominantly but much to his disappointment he was penalised for pulling down, as the rules dictate when no technique is applied. He responded by gripping hard again and going straight for the ashi-waza, controlling Hungarian Krisztian Toth’s balance and scoring waza-ari; it was beautifully done.

Beka Gviniashvili is back in Abu Dhabi with gold
Georgia’s Beka Gviniashvili set the pace and as he really likes to throw his opponents. The one who could keep his pace was Frenchman Loris Tassier. It was a first final and against Gviniashvili and for Tassier it was entering a new dimension. Gviniashvili is back on the highest podium in Abu Dhabi where he won the World Junior title in 2015.

Beka Gviniashvili still superior U90kg in Zagreb
Kenta Nagasawa was unlucky in the quarterfinals in Zagreb when he threw the Georgian Beka Gviniashvili In the weight class U90kg. However Nagasawa’s throw was reviewed and Nagasawa disqualified for a head dive. The Georgian reached the final to face the Brazilian Rafael Macedo, who had the merit of eliminating the Olympic runner-up and always explosive German, Eduard Trippel.

Beka Gviniashvili at his best
Beka Gviniashvili was going to be a judo star, until the figure of Lasha Bekauri emerged. With the Olympic champion absent, Gviniashvili led the pack of four Georgians. This is a category that they are good at, but the only one who reached the last step was Gviniashvili, who crushed all his opponents. Krisztian Toth is a seasoned veteran of a thousand battles and he still has plenty of rope left. In Tbilisi he avoided all the pitfalls and appeared in the final against Gviniashvili.
