Hayato Kondo books career best in Tokyo
Lightweights are often the preserve of Asian countries and especially Japan. This was confirmed once again with Japan of course present in the final of the Grand Slam in Tokyo.

Jaba Papinashvili bosses to victory
As for men U60kg, the lighter category was the only one that really respected the first two seeds at the Grand Slam in Baku. At the top, Russian Albert Oguzov reached the final with authority, defeating Azeri Rovshan Aliyev and Japanese Kondo Hayato in the semi-finals. Oguzov wanted everyone to know that today he was the boss. Below, Jaba Papinashvili did the same.

Pregnant Canadian judoka Kelita Zupancic retires
After representing Canada for twelve years on the international judo stage, Kelita Zupancic has retired from her athletic career. Although the decision was not an easy one, Zupancic has plenty of exciting new projects to look forward to in the next chapter of her life. Recently Sally Conway and Alice Schlesinger retired as well as last year’s decisions of Ami Kondo, Kathrin Unterwurzacher, Riki Nakaya, Dirk van Tichelt, Laura Vargas Koch among others.

Former lightweight World Champion Ami Kondo retires
Former lightweight World Champion Ami Kondo retires as judoka. Although the Nagoya native captured a 48kg World title at the 2014 world championships in Chelyabinsk and Olympic bronze, the tiny Kondo retires at the age of 25. In Russia she took the world title when she was just 19. Kondo ended up with bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics as well as the 2015 and 2017 world championships in Astana and Budapest.

World Champion Hikari Yoshioka left Japan for the first time
The second day of the Cadet World Championships learned us that the European athletes are strong in the category U48kg but today there was one factor throwing our trend away, Hikari Yoshioka of Japan. The tiny lightweight captured the gold medal in Almaty and stepped into the footlight of former senior world champion Ami Kondo who won this cadet category in 2011.

Ami Kondo finally wins Grand Slam Paris
Japanese lightweight Kondo Ami won her sixth Grand Slam title and her first in Paris as she dispatched World Judo Masters winner Distria Krasniqi of Kosovo with a sumptuous ko-uchi-gari for ippon. Japan won the first final of the competition after Kondo showed her worth and took a major step towards selection for the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo.
