Coralie Hayme defeats Stevenson for Abu Dhabi gold
15 years, that's starting to count. It was in fact from 2009, at the very beginning of the World Judo Tour adventure, that Abu Dhabi hosted its first tournament on the world circuit. Since then, the grand slams have followed one another at a steady pace, while other major international competitions have taken place here, including the junior, veteran and kata world championships and last May the senior world championships. This was the last major competition before the Paris Olympic Games. Now a new generation will stand up.

Karen Stevenson qualifying for Paris and coaching at EYOF
Maribor is the host town for the European Youth Olympic Festival, usually the first multi-sport event our young athletes get to experience. This year, in Maribor, there are more than 300 athletes hailing from 43 different countries and they’re experiencing it all, from the opening ceremony to media interaction and kitting out. It’s fun and exciting and also has the possibility to be daunting.

Shiyan Xu puts China on top
China has a strong tradition at +78kg and for a long time. In Astana, it was Shiyan Xu who demonstrated this by qualifying for the final of the Grand Slam, after a clear victory by two waza-ari in the first round against Elis Startseva (AIN), the first with ko-soto-gari, the second via osaekomi-waza. In the next round, she unflinchingly blocked a kneeling attack from Karen Stevenson (NED) and countered it for ippon. In the semi-finals, it remained for Shiyan Xu to settle the fate of her compatriot Xin Xu, to join former Junior World Championn Marit Kamps, which she did by performing a thunderous makikomi for ippon.

Raz Hershko brings another gold to Israel
Raz Hershko claimed another gold medal at a Grand Slam. In Tbilisi Hershko had to seriously fight the highest podium finish after her marathon semi final against Karen Stevenson (NED) and in the final Su Xin was on a positive dynamic.

Karen Stevenson wants to be a different heavyweight
Karen Stevenson (NED) fought in Jerusalem in December and placed 7th at the Masters but just two weeks later she made the firm decision that the end of 2022 was also the end of her U78kg career. Six Grand Prix medals, a grand slam silver and a Masters bronze were won at the lower weight but from new year 2023, Stevenson would be campaigning at +78kg.
