Puumalainen stunts again with European title
The Senior European Championships 2023, held in Montpellier in the south of France, came to an end on Sunday. The last final block of the competition began with the -90kg category. The public witnessed a strong final between current Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri (GEO), who was clearly the favourite, and former world champion, Nemanja Majdov (SRB). Winner of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam a week ago, Majdov brought the same energy and will into the European Championships. This was his third attempt to take the senior title, but his first victory, following two junior European titles, in 2014 and 2016.

Nemanja Majdov back with desired grand slam gold
Two veterans of the circuit acted as favourites at the bottom of the draw, Toth and Majdov. Krisztian Toth (HUN) is one of the most present judoka on the circuit. In 2023, he participated in ten World Judo Tour competitions, Abu Dhabi included. He likes it and that is visible, since he has already won six medals this season. It was Majdov though who captured the gold medal. Not having been present in a final for a long time Majdov was expected to be tactical as well as Mosakhlishvili, but with his long experience at the highest level, Majdov had obviously a little advantage. The final unfolded as planned.

Mikhail Igolnikov defends gold in Mongolia
After a victory in the first round, it was Mikhail Igolnikov (AIN) who made the best impression at the bottom of the draw. He then benefitted from the absence of former world champion, Nemanja Majdov (SRB), before winning against the 2021 junior world champion, Peter Safrany (HUN). In the semi-finals, Igolnikov beat Komronshokh Ustopiryon (TJK). After a tactical contest and three penalties given to Erlan Sherov (KGZ), Igolnikov won the gold medal.

Zelym Kotsoiev pleasures the home crowd in Baku with gold
In the final of the men’s U100kg at the Baku Grand Slam the crowd uninhibited and chanted Zelym Kotsoiev’s name. Just as Nemanja Majdov had been gazumped him his final, so was Aleksandar Kukolj. The Serbian attacked the home athlete’s front leg but Kotsoiev’s balance was too good and instead Kotsoiev extended his attacked leg and took out Kukolj’s far foot, turning into him as they went to the floor. It was a perfect example of the need to assimilate basic judo principles such as timing and balance. Kotsoiev has both and used both.

Another mindblowing comeback for Marcus Nyman
At the Grand Slam final U90kg two surprising names including the comeback of Swedish veteran Marcus Nyman who made his appearance after more than a year on the tatami, his first IJF event since the Olympic Games. His opponent in Baku was Nemanja Majdov who had a clear strategy for the final, to outgrip the Swede and cancel out his physical onslaught.

Mammadali Mehdiyev wins second Grand Slam
Already second in Paris less than two weeks ago, the Azeri Mammadali Mehdiyev, seeded number one in Tel Aviv, is in good shape for sure, evidenced by his entry into the final once again. If Nemanja Majdov of Serbia was not among the big favourites of the competition, he is not a stranger, since he was world champion in 2017 in Budapest. Since May 2019, he had not entered the final of a grand slam though. Here he is back at the highest level and that is good news.
