Beatriz Souza defeats Nunes in heavyweight final
Today was the comeback of double world champion Sarah Asahina, who saw Akira Sone (JPN) take the lead in Japan in recent years. Starting well in the competition without being seeded, she faced Beatriz Souza (BRA) in the semi-final and had to bow out to eventually be qualified for the bronze medal contest.

Mao Arai keeps the tradition of Japanese heavyweights with junior title
Since 2010 female Japanese heavyweights dominate the Junior World Championships by taking gold, the only exception is last year when Japan didn’t sent a team. Mao Ara became the successor of many Japanese world champions such as current Olympic Champion Akira Sone, former triple World Champion Sarah Asahina.

Wakaba Tomita confirms selection for the worlds by taking All Japan title
Wakaba Tomita captured the title of the 37th Empress's Cup All Japan Women's Judo Championship in Yokohama. In the final Tomia defeated Akemi Hashimoto. Sarah Asahina and Hikaru Kodama captured the bronze medals.

Kageura broke a world championship drought for Japan in the men's over 100-kilogram division dating back to 2003 by defeating Russia's Tamerlan Bashaev in the final at Laszlo Papp Arena.

Sarah Asahina claims third world title
Japanese heavyweight Sarah Asahina collected her third World title in an all Japanese final against Wakaba Tomita. Asahina looked stronger in a match that didn’t deliver any score. Asahina was world Open champion in 2017 and won the heavyweight title in 2018. Now 24, she was the best of the world for the third time in her young career but won’t go to the Olympic Games. Tomita is a year older and was junior world champion in 2015. She is less tall, but faster and with a refined technique, it was a fight between opposing styles.

Gentle Sarah Asahina invited disabled patients to the worlds
At the last day of the individual World Championships, reigning World Champion +78kg Sarah Asahina had some specials fans supporting her bouts. Although a fierce judoka on the mat, Sarah is a very gentle and likable person off the tatami. Moreover, she volunteers her free time working for ‘Project Puppy’, a program for patients with respiratory problems which started in 1983 by Dr. Katsuyuki Miyasaka.
