Beatriz Souza third female Olympic champion of Brazil
Beatriz Souza has become Brazil’s fifth-ever Olympic judo champion, following in the footsteps of Aurelio Miguel, Rogerio Sampaio, Sarah Menezes, and Rafaela Silva. Her technical, intelligent, and professional performance in the final solidified her position as one of the top judokas in the world.

Stunning field U57kg in Paris
One of the most spectacular weightclasses at the Grand Slam in Paris will be the U57kg division. On Friday the event will include three world champions: Christa Deguchi, Jessica Klimkait and Rafaela Silva as well as two Olympic champions Nora Gjakova and again Silva. They are spread evenly through the 4 quarters of the draw and in theory could be the four semi-finalists at the end of the preliminary block. However, we haven’t yet mentioned the big names punctuating the rest of the group and the list includes world and Olympic medallists in spades.

French dominate at Continental Open in Madrid
The Continental Open in Madrid has a history of almost 20 years. Some of the top athletes have won a gold medal in the Spanish capital such as Ole Bischof, Lucie Decosse and Brazilians Rafaela Silva and Sarah Menedez. Last weekend the Continental Open was held again and gave space to the talents of Europe mixed with a generation that is trying to gain some valuable points for the Olympic qualification or… some trust to get to this level. France dominated the event with 5 gold medals and 18 medals, followed by Italy, Spain and Germany with each two titles.

Deguchi back on her golden throne for Canada
What a surprising day again at the third day in Doha’s World Judo Championships. Canada celebrated a world title again, this time it was Christa Deguchi who regained the world title in a final against Haruka Funakubo who took a silver medal again like last year against Rafaela Silva. A prolific day for Canada with Jessica Klimkait who won bronze for the second year in a row.

Big battle between Rafaela Silva and Christa Deguchi in Antalya final
Today in Antalya number one seed Christa Deguchi was simply unshakable. All contests were finished in normal time with only her quarter-final against Cai (CHN) going the full distance. Christa was calm but laser-focussed and with the sharpness that attracted so much attention when she first arrived on the World Judo Tour in 2017. Her Masters gold in Jerusalem was not an accident and after a period of disappointment and recovery Deguchi seems fully fuelled on her road to Paris. She has one problem, by the name of Klimkait, but today she flew solo and with no additional domestic stress she managed things very well indeed.
