Golden Martti Puumalainen surprises the elite at the Masters
Finnish Martti Puumalainen was the surprise of the IJF Masters in Budapest winning the heavyweight category on Sunday. Puumalainen has not only become the first ever Finnish athlete to fight for a Masters medal, but he has done it with robust, confident judo and reached the final; a stellar performance earning a satisfied and understated nod from coach Rok Draksic. In the final he met with number one seed Temur Rakhimov (TJK).

Draksic inspires: Puumalainen first Finnish man to reach last 8 in IJF World Tour
Last weekend in Tashkent Martti Puumalainen was the first male Finnish judoka who reached the last eight in ten years. With two victories in his pocket he was opposed to Ushangi Kokauri and lost that match. The previous week in Prague Puumalainen fought in the semi final against World Champion Lukas Krpalek. His Slovenian coach Rok Drakic is in Finland since last year and is booking progress.

Slovenian Rok Draksic is the new head coach of the Finnish Judo Association. The Slovenian former number one in the world ranking list, six-time European medallist Rok Draksic is looking forward to his new job: “My goal is to bring Finnish judokas“ back to the game ”.
