Varlam Liparteliani bows out to judo
During the third day of competition of the Tbilisi Grand Slam 2024, the Georgian public had the joy of celebrating the end of Varlam Liparteliani end of career. Liparteliani bowed out to this environment which brought him so much and to which he gave so much. Silver medalist at Rio 2016, three times world vice-champion, for six world podia overall, and three times European champion for ten continental medals, we never stop drawing up the list of Varlam Liparteliani's awards. Still ranked 27th in the world, although he occupied a much higher rank, and a member of the IJF Athletes' Commission, 'Lipo' is an important figure in world judo.

Nora Gjakova rules once more U57kg
The level of the women’s U57kg class was high at the grand Slam in Baku. In the end it was Kosovo that captured a gold medal by the Olympic Champion Nora Gjakova. In the final against Liparteliani seemed early in the match out powered by Gjakova, who was trying but could not get close to her illustrious opponent. With a little ko-soto-gake, Gjakova took the lead and controlled until the last second to win the title.

Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag celebrates victory with Mongolian home crowd
Varlam Liparteliani (GEO) remains a phenomenon. Many athletes and fans thought he had stopped, at the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar he got injured and athletes thought he would stop, but Liparteliani doesn’t. He was in the final of a Grand Slam once again. At 34, the world and Olympic medallist still wants it and his fighting spirit is in tact. 10th in the ranking list for the moment, he remains a judoka that no-one in the category really wants to meet, in the hope of an easy bout.

Eyecatchers Grigalashvili and Liparteliani pull back from Tbilisi Grand Slam
On March 24-26, "Tbilisi Arena" will host the Tbilisi Grand Slam, where 424 athletes from 5 continents, 62 countries are currently registered. The Georgian national team will compete with a star-studded team at the Tbilisi Grand Slam, but it is sad that 2 days before the competition, the captain of the Georgian national team - Varlam Liparteliani and the world and European champion - Tato Grigalashvili will be recalled to the competition.

Varlam Liparteliani among oldest Grand Slam winners ever
At 34, Liparteliani proved with his gold medal at the Grand Slam in Tashkent that he still has the motivation and the ability to compete at the highest level. In the semi-final, against the Japanese Kotaro Ueoka, although led by a waza-ari that was scored after a only few seconds, the world and Olympic medallist managed to pick up the score and hold Ueoka in an acrobatic position on the floor.

Michael Korrel marries Paris
Number 1 seed U100kg, Dutchman Michael Korrel forged a path through all obstacles in Paris, including a French quarter-final challenge. He continued past Toma Nikiforov in the semi-final and looked set to win a confident gold. Zelym Kostoev (USE) was to be his adversary after he disposed of Kurbjeweit, Liparteliani and Veg (HUN) before throwing Kotsoiev (AZE) and then Elnahas.
